A discussion on Nationalism.
Much is being discussed on an issue of national feeling. A lot is being gurgled against the present surge in Nationalism and it's repercussion since the present Government at center took charge. A general feeling is being created that this feeling is bad for national integration and unity of country. Some groups are feeling isolated. A fear psychosis is being created in the public. Some media channels are taking much interest in highlighting the issue in a negative way. Everybody is defining Nationalism in his own way as if India is not a nation itself... All the stakeholders are not under one sense of unity in diversity. Then why is so ? What is the fear of being one nation? Does democracy mean anarchy ? Does it mean to speak in different voices and speak against oneness ? Is it to decide India into different sub parts on the basis of views? India was divided on the basis of religion once. Are we to divide it again because we are committed to democratic values and free speech concept ? Does respect to dissent mean to support sedition ? These are the questions we have to think over and discuss.
“A parochial, selfish, narrow minded nationalism has caused so much misfortune and misery to the world. A mad and exaggerated form of this cult of nationalism is today running rampant….”...
The above quote was by a sworn communist M N Roy way back in 1942. This is the vedic lines now a days by a few like Justice A P Saga who spoke on a lecture recently and the whole world of dissent are united treating as a gospel. A few media channels are playing it to push into the brains of its sworn viewers.
What is Nationalism then ? Is it patriotism ?
Patriotism is love for one's country's territorial integrity, its flag, its oneness with a dedication to keep it up at the cost of one's life. Soldiers do possess this. Nationalism is a broader concept with love for one's culture, heritage, boarder, love, dedication and emotional bond. Nationalism can't be decided or diluted. It is necessary for maintaining unity in diversity. Those who propagate anything against unity, against oneness, national unity and its feeling can't talk or be followed on issues like this. The nation consists of a its territorial integrity and live for it for most of all. Those who talk of sedition don't come under freedom of speech banner. Rules and penal code are there, promulgated by constitution. All have to obey it. Freedom of speech doesn't grant freedom to raise finger at parents wish in part of a baby. Neither a thief nor an anti social has free hand to loot and cheat others on the strength of fundamental rights to earn his livelihood. Sedition is a crime and freedom of speech is within a certain parameter. How can be Nationalism be termed as Hindu Nationalism or those who oppose it ? Does the sworn hatred to term of Hindu make a demand to change the name of Hindustan ? Does secularism mean to oppose everything that Hinduism propagate ? Is Cow to be killed because Hindus term it their mother ? Can this be the only criteria for sticking on eating beef because it can be easily and cheaply available in the land of cows? Is it normal to allow it for vote bank politics ?
Indian nationalism is an instance of territorial nationalism, inclusive of all its people, despite their diverse ethnic and religious backgrounds. It continues to strongly influence the politics of India and reflects an opposition to the sectarian strands of Hindu nationalism and Muslim nationalism.
India has been devided once. It was because of selfish mechanism at that time for power. It shouldn't afford another. It is time to talk in one voice and think. Freedom of speech, thinking, preach etc are meaningless and whoever goes against national feeling must be identified. Democratic values never allow sedition and anti national preaching in whatever means it may be.
