.......KALIDASA, THE GREAT SOCIAL SCINTIST...

.......KALIDASA, THE GREAT SOCIAL SCINTIST...

Friends, today is a day, I will take the risk of analysing the greatest ever advice to the womanhood of the world wherever the girl is uprooted from her parents abode for ever institutionally to manage another home, to mingle herself in a new eco system, to interact with a different set of relatives all with practical arrogance and pride of ownership, with a dream to live a conjugal life with a man older in age, unknown till a tie was knotted around her hand with him. In those days, a girl was given...Yes the word is thus meant...Offered because she was the greatest property, wealth, possession a house holder had, in oblation... again mark the word... presented to the God incarnate... the son in law..The most revered relation for a house holder....In an age she was to enter adolescence... Yes, KALIDASA has depicted the reality in the time frame not much different in rural India even now. Naturally, she is to be advised by the eldest member of the family on the technicalities of conjugal issues. Here, the great sage Kanwa, takes the brunt...There was no female member in Hermitage, except students.. We will see the magic of this advice today...I swear to be received by all and sundry in this fraternity, word by word... We have lost the fine thread of tradition in these 70 years our system was taken over by demons.

In these four lines, we will see the entire gamut of a young girl's nightmare..All the complexities of the critical time has been so beautifully answered point wise...Earmarked with justice...An entire sea has been accommodated in a small pitcher...We will see the marvel of sanskrit language ..So scientifically devised... The whole life of a girl entering into the new home is explained with completeness.

This is the advice of Kanva to Sakuntala:
“Listen to your in-laws and elders and serve them, look upon the other wives of the King as your dear friends, even when you get angry with your husband keep your cool and do not act on impulse, be generous with your servants, do not be conceited about your good fortunes. By following these dictums you will acquire the status of a true housewife. Those who do the opposite cause great mental agony to the family.

Let's see..What counts as the new life most... the in laws..
1.  The elders...Parents in law and their elders. The way to please them...A new entrant has to please everybody..That is the technique...By service...Care and loyal manners...The easiest way is to nurse them with care because they need it the most in their old age.
2.  कुरु प्रियसखीवृत्तिं सपत्नीजने.. Next important people who count to the new entrant into a royal harem are co wives...Seniors who ruled the inner court and the husband. The little girl has to overcome the mischievous queens. The sage advises her to be friendly with them.and not torment them being the most beloved of her husband. To win them needs cool sharing ..And winning their hearts.
3.  Treat your husband with brain.. don't take advantage of his unquestioned love towards you. Don't act impulsively..Normal to a young girl with husband's complete submission. Discord starts with arrogance.. when misunderstood, don't go before the angry husband and buy time for the inevitable at leisure. भर्तुर्विप्रकृतापि रोषणतया मा स्म प्रतीपं गमः ..The best way is not to argue and hurt his ego.. wah..What a nice term..
4.  The house hold consists of more relatives... Servants...They are part of household...And a young entrant has to look after them ..Treat them for happy conjugal life...Wah...Great were those days when servants..Guests...Beggars and outsiders were relevant to a kulabadhu..The new entrant needed to look after.. this was heaven...Under the Sun...On this earth..Even divinities vied the life for...Using Shakuntala was to take care of them also with love and care...भूयिष्ठं भव दक्षिणा परिजने .. be excessive soft on those who serve you because they would treat you as mother..Before you give birth to a new born... Friends..How many of us advise our child..
5.  The most pertinent one...Don't be arrogant out of good fortune..Don't fall a pray of pride..Good days bring prejudice.. be careful not to mistreat your good luck... Good days may be lived with head bowed down.. she was the most powerful queen of a large kingdom with entire love of the king in her bag.. भाग्येष्वनुत्सेकिनी
6.  These are the only ways young women lead an exalted life in the household...Everything laid down thread bare.  यान्त्येवं गृहिणीपदं युवतयः वामाः कुलस्याधय...Those who don't follow become the destroyer of the cult..As if everything rests on the shoulders of the young girl who has not reached teen age. She is the center of the entire family...Here the palace with hundreds of guests and servants...She has to.please her husband, care the elders..Look after her servants.. Share with her co wives to keep them with equal dignity and what not..

Here I rest my friend wishing my best to relish the great Indian culture..The social niceties..The magic of the language..The greatness of KALIDASA.. and your happy time. Thanks.
